Old Iron Press, established in 2022, was dedicated to retooled classics and championed small, strange, and uncategorizable work. Proudly based in Indianapolis, Indiana, it existed apart from traditional publishing and focused on designing future classics created in limited numbers or with print-on-demand options, as well as collaborative experiences. OIP’s team included Eliza Tudor, Drake Preston, Alex Mattingly, as well as OIP mascot, Gutenborg.
OIP was honored to publish the work of Flor Aguilera, Devon Balwit, Joyce Brinkman, Frances Cannon, Traci Cumbay, Corey Michael Dalton, Mary Christine Delea, Carolyn Divish, Daphne Fauber, tova greene, Amy Halloran, Vinnie Hansen, Chris Huntington, Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda, Hank Krutulis, Jay Lesandrini, Robyn Ryle, Barbara Shoup, Elle Cee Wallace, and to collaborate with members of the community on projects and events.
OIP’s 2023 anthology, Playing Authors, sold out in a matter of weeks. The anthology asked the questions: who gets to tell stories, how are they told, and just what does it mean to play author? Inspired by the vintage game of Authors, this collection of 19 new works were written by 18 authors who surrendered the rules and played in surprising ways with the question of authorship. Work included literary mashups, personal essays, alternative history, and other disobedient forms.
Additionally, OIP hosted a lively online Q&A series with members of our community, a monthly Instagram gameshow giveaway, and a collaborative newsletter, The Gutenborg Project. OIP’s focus on collaboration and play were witnessed as well in their print-on-demand and limited edition objects.
OIP came to a close in 2024, but its spirit of collaboration and play continues. Thanks so much for being part of its history. All best wishes for your journey!
